I added AirPlay 2 to my HiFi speakers with a cheap Apple router from 2012!

🚨👇At the end of this video I reference using voice control through Siri, however It's come to my attention that some users CAN'T use Siri to control their AirPort Express via voice control, so I made the video below showing how to solve this problem!👇 Add Siri to Your AirPort Express AirPlay 2 HiFi Stereo Setup with a HomePod mini https://youtu.be/oQIfqPJcXhY Back to the original description: Apple made a router with a headphone jack on it back in 2012... I'm not sure why they did that, but we're going to take advantage of it now, just 10 years into the future. Adding the AirPort Express Base Station A1392 model to your network is super easy, and allows you to use AirPlay 2 with anything plugged into its headphone port. It's pretty dang good at driving a line level sound source as well, meaning pretty much any amp should be able to handle it. I have it running a 3.5mm headphone to RCA cable into the red and white jacks on the back of my NAD amplifier marked "CD" as in "CD quality audio" (thanks AirPlay 2!). The NAD amplifier is hooked up to my floor standing Yamaha speakers, which just sound incredible. I got them for $50 on Craigslist a few years ago and they sound better than any modern soundbar I've heard lately. They are my go to speakers for music enjoyment in my house, so it's high time I added the convenience of AirPlay 2, and for less than $50? Sheesh, just go for it. What I used for this setup: 3.5mm to RCA (male) Cable from Amazon (~$7US) https://amzn.to/36xXHA2 (affiliate) Apple AirPort Express A1392 from eBay (mine was $36US) https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=a1392&_sacat=0 HiFi Stereo Receiver - just has to have RCA inputs. Mine is an NAD 7130. HiFi Speakers - mine are connected with standard speaker wire. They are Yamaha NS-8390's.

Dylan Macintosh

Your tech journalist.

I nerd out so you don't have to.

What I do

I cut through the technological weeds to give you what each of us came here for- a simpler life through better technology.  Just as inventing fire or the steam engine changed the vector of humanity millennia and centuries ago, so have computers today- only mind-blowingly, exponentially so.  The circumstances we find ourselves in today mean that each of us must become something we never dreamed- a nerd.

‍

When I'm not talking tech, I'm posting about it on YouTube, on Instagram, and tweeting about it all on the bird app. When the day is won, I'm gaming it up like an absolute madman or making music in my home studio.

‍

Is your name seriously Macintosh?

Yes- Macintosh is my real name.  As a child I resented being called “the computer kid”, so much so that I actually swore off Apple products during my angsty adolescence.  It wasn’t until the last of several Android phones bricked itself that I dropped the device into the trash can as I walked into the Apple store… and the rest, as they say, is a very expensive habit of premium consumer electronics.

‍

Is your name seriously "Dylan"?

Yes again- I recently found out that my first name has a history with Apple as well: the "Dylan" programming language was being developed for Macintosh computers in the early 90's, with a 1995 release- the year I was born. Coincidence? I guess, if you believe in that sort of thing...

Just kidding. Nothing was actually shutdown. It wouldn't have been a good idea. Do it again?
